Lion Gulch Trailhead

Forest Service trailhead on US 36 between Estes Park and Lyons for the Lion Gulch Trail to Homestead Meadows, where eight homesteads were settled between 1889 and 1923. No fee; dogs on a hand-held leash.

A Canyon Lakes Ranger District trailhead in the Roosevelt National Forest, 7 miles east of Estes Park and 13 miles west of Lyons. The Lion Gulch Trail drops at first, then climbs about three miles beside a stream to Homestead Meadows, where information boards tell the story of each homestead; visiting all of them adds 2.8 miles. Horses are allowed (certified weed-free hay only), motorized equipment is not, and historic artifacts are to be left where they lie.
